Evdokiya N. Afanaseva, Vladimir D. Monastyrev

Turkic Languages, Jahrgang 27 (2023), Ausgabe 2, Seite 286 - 299

The paper describes the general concept, basic principles, and prospects of a new project in Yakut lexicography, a Mongolian-Russian-Yakut dictionary, which is a collaborative effort between the Institute for Humanities Research and Problems of Indigenous Peoples of the North, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Language and Literature, Mongolian Academy of Sciences. Although modern linguistics has shown considerable interest in this problem, systematic studies of Yakut-Mongolian language contacts are still lacking. The present project is a first step by Yakut lexicographers in comparative lexicographic studies of Yakut and Mongolian, and is meant to lead to more fundamental and applied investigations. The purpose of the project is to reveal common areas of communication in the Yakut and Mongolian lexicons and systematize lexical and semantic parallels. So far, we have defined the principles for word selection and the structure of dictionary entries that will include modern Mongolian and Old Script variants with transcriptions. Special attention is paid to identifying cross-linguistic parallels. Mongolian is translated into Yakut through Russian. This research project is aimed at scholars studying Turkic-Mongolic language contacts.

This paper deals with phraseological units containing a bird-name component. Although such phraseological units have been studied before, they have not yet been given adequate attention in Yakut and Kazakh linguistics. Using a comparative method, we have identified universal and culture-specific features of such phraseological units.
