The paper deals with the Eynu people living in the southern part of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China, from linguistic and sociolinguistic points of view, mainly based on field work conducted in Šayχil village in Kashgar prefecture and in Tameɣil and Givoz villages in Khotan prefecture during August 2015. Although the Eynus are gradually abandoning their traditional lifestyle, their language still shows some vitality among local people with increasing interaction with Uyghur dialects of their surroundings in Kashgar and Khotan respectively. Some lexical and grammatical differences between the three places exhibit dialectal features. Unlike previous research, our visit also included meeting women in the villages; this is important, as women are known to be better repositories than men of original culture and language. Women are normally in less contact with outsiders and they transmit the culture to their offspring.
