This study deals with the etymology of the Kazakh word zertte- to examine’,‘to scrutinize’,‘to evaluate’. On the evidence of the Karakalpak verb izertle- ‘to research’, it is argued that the verb goes back to East Old Turkic eδar- ‘to pursue’, ‘to follow’. Alternative analyses of the suffixes are discussed.
